Google Details How It Keeps The Play Store, Android Apps Clean Of Malware

Google Details How It Keeps The Play Store, Android Apps Clean Of Malware
Google revealed how it verifies apps before they are published in the Play Store to ensure that Android devices operate smoothly and securely. The process, which includes the Verify apps solution and the so-called DOI rating mechanism, is said to have flagged around 25,000 malwares. (Photo : Android)
Last Jan. 17, Google declared that silence speaks louder than words with the way it has been working to ensure that Android devices remain secure, but the company violated that mantra in the very same announcement by detailing how it endeavors to guarantee that Google Play Store and the apps sold therein are free of any form of malware.

You cannot really fault Google for patting itself on the back for its vigilance especially when you learn that the company was able to detect 25,000 malwares that, if allowed, would have thoroughly compromised Android devices and their users' data.
Google Verify Apps Solution
One of the key mechanisms that Google uses to weed out malwares such as Gooligans and Ghost Push Trojan is the Verify apps tool. This checks whether there are malwares or harmful apps installed in an Android handset before and after it is published in the Play Store. You might have encountered it at work if you have been warned about an app or a suggestion that it should be uninstalled.

Addressing Security For Installed Apps
It is worth noting that Android is an open platform, which makes Google's security efforts critical. Some compromised apps could, therefore, escape scrutiny or install outside of the Play Store. Also there are instances when Android devices no longer check with the Verify apps solution. These are what Google calls as Dead or Insecure devices.
In these conditions, the Android Security team conducts a statistical analysis to determine the harm that devices are exposed to and take down apps based on the number of installations and their retention rates.

"Even after you've installed an app, built-in software regularly scans your device to ensure that app is behaving," Google said. "If the app steps out of line, you'll be notified and Google Play can automatically block it, lickety-split."
Google On Transparency
According to Google, the Verify apps mechanism and the DOI scorer, along with other unidentified Android anti-malware initiatives demonstrates a multi-layered approach that allows its security team to keep the Play Store and the Android ecosystem safe and stable.
Google has also indicated that the public would probably get to know more about its continuing security processes in a drive to increase transparency. This goal is sensible if only for the fact that Android users will know that their devices are safe to use straight out of the box and that they can download just about any app in the Play Store, confident that it will not harm their device or compromise personal data

Huawei Set To Launch Another Honor Smartphone Soon

Huawei Set To Launch Another Honor Smartphone Soon

With the Honor 8 becoming quite popular among its users. Rumors are swirling that a flagship device with DUK-TL30 model number shall be launched soon, which could be the new Honor 9. (Photo : Huawei)

Even as the Honor 8 receives the Android Nougat update, it seems that the company is also thinking of launching the device's successor dubbed the Honor 9.

According to a new report, Huawei's Honor brand could receive a boost as the company is expected to launch a new flagship in the coming months.

The source of this information is a listing on TENAA, which is the Chinese equivalent of the FCC. A mysterious Honor smartphone bearing the model number DUK-TL30 has been certified by TENAA, suggesting that its release is not far away.

Since the listing does not reveal the name of the smartphone, but only its model number, it is not confirmed whether the device is the Honor 9 or some other handset under this brand name.

Rumored Specs

It is expected that this upcoming Honor 9 mobile device would be an enhancement over its predecessor the Honor 8. Per leaks, this Honor handset shall be equipped with an octa-core processor clocked a 2.4GHz and will possess Kirin 960 CPU compared to the Honor 8 version which had Kirin 950 chipset.

The anonymous handset will probably have a 5.7-inch Quad HD display based on the TENAA listing. This unannounced model shall house 6 GB of RAM and could tout on-board storage of 128 GB, which will be expandable to an additional 128 GB via a microSD card.

The Huawei Honor 8 is fueled by a 3000 mAh battery, whereas the Honor 9 is expected to house a 3900 mAh battery. The smartphone will offer dual-SIM support and may also pack in a fingerprint sensor.

In addition, this flagship device will probably have a dual-camera setup - a 12-megapixel primary camera along with a 2-megapixel camera with LED flash system. The secondary camera of the device is expected to be 8-megapixels, making it perfect for taking selfies and also video calls.

The smartphone listed on TENAA measures 6.18 x 3.05 x .27 inches and weighs 6.5 ounces.

The 4G LTE capable smartphone will also support Bluetooth 4.1 and may launch in a gold color per reports. The mysterious Honor smartphone could also come pre-loaded with Android 7.0 Nougat.

May Not Be Honor 9?

Since the Honor 8 has been updated with Android 7.0 Nougat version recently and the phone is already doing so well in the market, a possibility exists that the company may not look to launching the successor Honor 9 so soon. Therefore, the Honor DUK-TL30 could be a completely different handset.

Huawei has an event scheduled on Feb. 26 at the MWC 2017, but whether this mysterious Honor device will be unveiled alongside the rumored P10 and P10 Plus smartphones remains to be seen

In a rather unexpected move,Sharp has just announced an Android One phone, the first for Japan – and seemingly the first for a developed market, as well.

Facebook Issues Fix For Messenger Battery Drain Problem

Facebook Issues Fix For Messenger Battery Drain ProblemMark Zuckerberg has a new year resolution of reading two books a month and visiting 30 states in 2017 to give "everyone a voice".
Given his past choices for bizarre vows, like only eating the meat that he killed, this year's resolution seems quite low key after an ambitious 2015, where he fulfilled his promise of coding his own Jarvis.
Mark may have opted for a less strenuous 2017, after fending off too many crisis at Facebook last year, but it seems that fate has some other plans for him altogether.
